Short biography

Kamal Haasan was born into a Tamil Brahmin family on 7th November 1954 in Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu. He attended schools in Paramakudi, Triplicane, and Madras. He developed an early interest in films during his school days and made his film debut at the age of four with Kalathur Kannamma (1960), for which he won the President’s Gold Medal as a child artist. He subsequently acted in five more films as a child artist.

In 1970, Kamal Haasan returned to cinema in adult roles with Maanavan, initially appearing in supporting and antagonist roles, and also working as an assistant director. His first major lead role came in 1975 with Apoorva Raagangal, directed by renowned filmmaker K. Balachander, which earned him his first Filmfare Award.

Over his decades-long career, Kamal Haasan has acted in numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as Vishwaroopam, Manmadan Ambu, Dasavathaaram, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Vasool Raja MBBS, Nayakan, Indian, Hey Ram, and Virumaandi. In recent years, he achieved massive success with Vikram (2022), which became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time, and Vikram: Hitlist strengthened his pan-Indian appeal. His long-delayed film Indian 2 was released in 2024, continuing the legacy of his iconic role as Senapathy.

Apart from acting, Kamal Haasan has worked as a screenwriter, choreographer, director, producer, lyricist, and playback singer. His major directorial ventures include Chachi 420, Hey Ram, Virumaandi, and Vishwaroopam. Considering his immense contribution to Indian cinema, he was honored with the Padma Shri in 1990, the Padma Bhushan in 2014, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2021, India’s second-highest civilian award.

Kamal Haasan was born to D. Srinivasan, an advocate and freedom fighter, and Rajalakshmi, a homemaker.

Brothers

He has two elder brothers, Charuhasan (born 1930) and Chandrahasan (born 1936). Influenced by their father, both studied law and practiced as advocates. Later, Charuhasan developed an interest in acting and appeared in several films, including the National Film Award-winning Kannada film Tabarana Kathe. Chandrahasan was a film producer and legal professional.

He has a younger sister named Nalini Raghu (born 1946), who is a noted classical dancer. Her son Gautham entered films through Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram.

Kamal Haasan married dancer Vani Ganapathy in 1978 at the age of 24. The couple separated in 1988.
